Any business invoicing customers or paying vendors in more than one currency eventually runs into the same question: does the accounting system actually handle currency conversion correctly, or does it just record numbers and leave the reconciliation to a human with a calculator? Odoo handles it natively, but “natively supported” and “correctly configured for your business” aren’t automatically the same thing.
How Odoo handles multi-currency accounting
Every transaction in a foreign currency is recorded at the exchange rate in effect on that transaction’s date, converted into the company’s base currency for reporting. Odoo can pull exchange rates automatically from configured providers on a scheduled basis, or accept manually entered rates where automatic feeds aren’t available or desired.
Where currency gains and losses come from
Because an invoice is recorded at one exchange rate and the payment against it often arrives at a different rate days or weeks later, a currency gain or loss is created — Odoo calculates and posts this automatically at reconciliation, rather than requiring a manual journal entry. This is one of the areas where manual accounting systems most often introduce errors, simply because tracking exchange-rate movement across dozens of open transactions by hand is tedious and error-prone.
Configuration decisions that matter
- Which currencies to activate. Odoo supports every major currency out of the box, but only activated currencies appear in transaction forms — activate what the business actually uses, not everything available.
- Exchange rate source and frequency. Automatic providers update on a schedule (often daily); businesses with high transaction volume in volatile currencies may need more frequent updates than the default.
- Currency exchange difference accounts. Where realized and unrealized gains/losses post in the chart of accounts — this should align with how your accountant wants to see these reflected in financial statements.
Multi-currency in multi-company setups
For businesses operating multiple legal entities in different countries, each company can maintain its own base currency, with consolidated group reporting handling the conversion to a group reporting currency. This is a genuinely more complex configuration than single-company multi-currency and benefits from being scoped properly during implementation rather than retrofitted later.
Frequently asked questions
Does Odoo update exchange rates automatically?
Yes, through configurable rate providers, on a schedule you set — daily is common, though this can be adjusted based on how currency-sensitive the business’s transactions are.
Can historical transactions be corrected if an exchange rate was wrong?
Yes, though correcting posted transactions should go through proper accounting adjustment entries rather than editing historical records directly.
Does multi-currency accounting require Odoo Enterprise?
Core multi-currency functionality is available in Community edition; some advanced consolidation features for multi-company reporting are Enterprise-only.
